With their long-awaited reunion just around the corner, we’re revisiting the fashion sense of our favourite Friends. The gang epitomised 90s style, but what would they wear today? Here’s what we think we’d find in their wardrobes today
When we look back at the fashion of Friends, it’s amazing how many of the gang’s style choices we’d still wear today. With the 90s revival in full swing, classic pieces like the slip dress, dungarees, choker necklaces and oversized outerwear are all enjoying a fashion moment. But, 12 years after the final episode, and with the characters now in their mid-40s, how would our six favourite New Yorkers dress today? Here are our predictions…
Rachel With its mix of cute dungarees, vintage sweaters and chic Ralph Lauren suits, Rachel’s 90s wardrobe was flawless. In 2016, we wouldn’t expect anything less from the most fashionable Friend; her style would mix high street and designer pieces in that effortless way that only the truly stylish can, with classic staples and on-trend accessories keeping her look relevant. Her go-to designers would be Roksanda and Paul Smith, with playful pieces by Anya Hindmarch, but she’d also be a devotee of Reiss, Whistles and Topshop Unique.
Chandler Known for his baseball shirt and chino combo, Chandler would have smartened up a little bit thanks to the influence of his hipster ad exec colleagues. We’d expect him to fully embrace retro normcore and stick to a smart-casual uniform of Stan Smiths, crew neck sweaters (cashmere these days, of course) and oversized statement glasses – a look that would work for every occasion, from hitting the park with the twins to a client meeting at the office. When it comes to outerwear, Chandler would stick to the classics: a navy pea coat with a tartan scarf. Could he be any more on-trend?
Phoebe The group’s most experimental member when it came to her clothes, Phoebe was never afraid to opt for clashing colours, loud prints and bold accessories. The Phoebe of 2016 may have mellowed a little with age but we don’t think she’d lose her individuality, and she’d be all over this season’s trend for eye-popping brights and extra-long earrings. In fact, Ms Buffay’s wardrobe wouldn’t have to change much to fit modern sensibilities; an oversized faux fur coat, printed backpack and patchwork-printed dress would top her new season wish list.
Joey The Joey Tribbiani of the late 90s had never met a plaid shirt that he didn’t love at first sight – his relationship with that style staple lasted longer than all of his on-screen romances put together. These days, we reckon he’d find sartorial inspiration in that other great ladies’ man: David Beckham. Slim-cut jeans, chunky boots, a white T-shirt and heavy knit would be his everyday look, swapped for a fitted white shirt (sleeves expertly rolled) tucked into tailored trousers and finished off with a pair of desert boots for a special occasion. He might even be able to get away with this season’s hottest jacket – the bomber.
Monica With her love of a cropped cardi and a good midi skirt, Monica had a wardrobe that we could imagine actually wearing ourselves. Her 2016 style would be similarly accessible; this mother of twins would reach for her carefully tailored separates, timeless staples and preppy accessories for every occasion, from the school run to a trip to Central Perk. Expect her to rock a Breton top, skinny jeans and ballerina pumps on the weekend, and trade in her chef whites for slightly-flared trousers and a Victoriana-inspired high neck blouse during the week.
Ross The palaeontology professor would be pleased to hear that geek chic is still in – and sweater vests have never been more in vogue. We don’t think Ross would need to change his 90s look much for 2016 (aside from ditching those leather trousers for good!) For him, it’d be all about subtle style tweaks: turning up his chinos, swapping sensible shoes for suede desert boots and adding a coloured blazer over his cardi and shirt. At the weekend, he’d go out of his way to avoid embarrassing his fashion forward wife and teenage daughter by wearing fitted jeans, a chunky sweater and a tailored trench.
